Website Design

Blog / Website Design

These days, having a website is essential for the success and survival of your business. If people can’t find you online, you pretty much don’t exist.

Your business website acts as a 24/7 storefront. It sells your products or services all day, every day, even while you sleep. That’s why it’s important to make sure you not only have a website but that it’s good and designed with your business goals and audience in mind.

So how do you know if your site is operating at its full potential? Have it designed by Field Group, of course! Jokes aside, here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure your website works for your business.

Collect Data

You’ll never know how your site is performing if you aren’t tracking the actions visitors take. Think about what’s important to your business: phone calls, form submissions, online purchases? There are a lot of tools you can use to measure online results.

You can track most actions on your website using Google Analytics. If you don’t have Google Analytics installed on your site, don’t sweat it! It’s free and easy to get started.

Tracking phone calls can be slightly tricky with Google Analytics, so we recommend CallRail as an alternative. CallRail has a monthly fee, but it’s totally worth it if your business depends on phone calls! A free option (with fewer features than CallRail) is to use Google Voice with a linked phone number.

Punch Up Your Content

The text and images on your site should succinctly communicate everything your customers need to know about visiting your business.

It can be difficult to know just how much text you should use, but when in doubt, less is more. If you’ve spent hours trying to hack and slash your way through the text to reduce it, yet you still come to the conclusion that you need all the text, don’t fret! Instead, make sure you organize it with headlines, bulleted or numbered lists, and logical sections—this will make it easier for people to skim the text or skip to the parts they want to read.

You can, and should, use images on your site to help illustrate points. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but this only applies to good pictures. Obviously, “good” is a subjective qualification; however, it’s helpful to keep in mind that cheesy stock photos, irrelevant images, and low-quality or blurry pictures can do more harm than good.

Now that’s a cheesy stock photo.

Customize Your Design

When designing your website, it’s imperative to keep your targeted and potential audience in mind. Look through your site and pretend you’re a brand-new visitor who knows nothing about your business. Does the navigation make sense? Is the content on each page relevant and logically organized? Is it easy to find what you’re looking for? If you can’t answer yes to those questions, it might be time to consider redesigning your website.

Your website also needs to be true to your brand (we cannot stress this enough). Are the colors, photos, fonts, and tone representative of how you want people to feel when they think about your business? Your site is a great place to show customers what your company is all about, and branding is an influential and subtle way to show the world who you are.
